Farewell to Cheryl

Farewell & Happy Retirement to Cheryl The Board of Directors of Las Casa de San Gabriel Community Center announces the retirement of CEO Cheryl Prentice as of August 29, 2014. This is the first time in more than forty years that Cheryl will not stand at the door to greet families on the first day of school.  With deep gratitude, we acknowledge the generous nature and dedicated service that Cheryl brought to La Casa each day. “The many, many families of La Casa remain precious to me and it is with joy to have a second generation come  to the preschool.    La Casa is at an exciting time with our connection to LAUP, First 5 LA’s Race to the Top, and our Board training with Executive Service Corps.  I’m delighted to pass the torch to Eduardo Garcia.  Now I will have time to see more of my own family, to travel, and

Annual Appeal

Our Circle of Support is growing! La Casa’s Annual Appeal is underway and in just one month we have already raised almost $7,000.  We are more than halfway to our goal of $10,000, which will be matched by our generous anonymous donor! While we are very fortunate to have a community of donors who consistently support La Casa, each year the number of people we serve continues to grow. In our efforts to continue our mission of service, we need to increase the number of donors to La Casa, so now is a great time to give for the first time or encourage your friends and family to support us!  It’s only with help from people like you that La Casa can continue to provide valuable education opportunities and helpful resources to families who cannot otherwise afford these services. It’s not too late to make a gift that will help

La Casa’s Friends Turn Out for Spring Events

San Marino Community Church donates more than 150 hours as La Casa’s friends join the parade of spring giving. If you’re like us, you know that there’s a feeling of real accomplishment that comes when you give to those in need. It may be a donation of resources like cash or manpower, or it may be the joyous noise of dozens of volunteers pouring their hearts and souls into a physical task – not to mention some backbreaking labor, and a whole lot of love. It’s that season at La Casa when so many good people in our community turn out to help San Gabriel’s families in need. These are their stories. San Marino Community Church proves what sweat equity’s all about. Our good friends at San Marino Community Church have outdone themselves, demonstrating their friendship with La Casa. On May 4-6, the congregation volunteered their time to serve our

Smile!

Dr. Jason Gee, a local dentist and member of the San Gabriel Presbyterian Church, recently provided a dental screening for all of La Casa’s preschoolers. Each of the children were examined and given lessons on flossing and brushing. The importance of healthy foods and exercise was stressed as part of total health. Volunteers, from the church, helped to make the process fun and relaxing for the children. A toothbrush and toothpaste were provided for each child. Dr. Gee and volunteers have been providing this service to the preschoolers for 3 years.  Parents appreciate the screening and follow up recommendations are provided, so that the risk for cavities is decreased. Thank you Dr. Gee and volunteers!

Folklorico Holds Fundraiser

The Ballet Folklorico Sol de Fuego recently held a fundraiser at La Casa.  The funds will be used to attend workshops and pay for new dresses. The group was started in 1995 by Anamaria and Serafin Chavelas and their friend Ricardo Palomino. Currently there are fifteen dancers, the youngest at age 3, who regularly practice at La Casa and call it their second home. The group performs at all types of event from community events, fundraisers such as the San Gabriel Fiesta and collaborative workshops such as Danzantes Unidos, and private parties.  Dancing Folklorico is a great way to encourage our youth to learn more about their culture and get a great workout too!
