La Casa gets some TLC and a new mural!

Local community leader, Alexis Salamanca worked with HOPE worldwide and Lifeway Church to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with their “Day on Hope” event at La Casa. Almost 150 volunteers donated their time to paint the outside of several buildings, clean up our landscaping and even fix electrical issues in our gym. We were fortunate to have a local artist, Amber Thompson Plummer, donate her time and skills to create a colorful mural that represents La Casa’s history and rich culture. Local organizations, businesses and individuals came together to donate the funds needed to provide the paint for this amazing piece of art that has transformed the outside of La Casa. A big THANK YOU to the artist, Amber Thompson Plummer and all the volunteers who made this happen! La Casa would also like to thank the organizations who contributed to the HOPE worldwide event: MR Electric,

La Casa’s Quality Preschool Shines!

At La Casa, we are proud to offer a high quality preschool that is open to any child, regardless of their family’s financial situation. We are the only preschool in the area that offers a bilingual early childhood education program which charges tuition on an income-based sliding scale. A former preschool parent recently wrote us about her experience at La Casa: “I had a purely wonderful experience at La Casa. This preschool has a good balance of teachers, volunteers, and a caring staff. I love the activities they exposed my child to: music, Spanish, manners, singing, respect, and visits to the library. For the level of education and service provided, the prices and hours were ideal to our family schedule. After attending La Casa’s preschool, my child entered elementary school socially adjusted and academically prepared. She even received student of the month this October! I highly recommend this school to

Take Two Minutes to Change a Life

Have you donated to La Casa during this year? If not, then you may think that one gift would not be missed. But here at La Casa, EVERY donation makes a difference. And it only takes two minutes to write a check or donate online. If you’ve never donated to La Casa before, then this is the best time to share your support. But you may be asking, “why me? why should I donate to La Casa?” Here’s our answer. . . . Because your gift to La Casa has the power to make a change to the lives of families and children right here in our community. Because of your donation We will be able to continue our annual dental screenings, like the one where four-year-old Mario got to see a dentist for the first time and went home with this own special care kit. Because of your donation,

Operation Gobble and Boxes of Love

La Casa had two “Operation Gobble” days this year. We distributed more than 100 donated turkeys to local families! A big thank you goes out to Assembly Member Ed Chau for his turkey donation and to the Golden State Water Company for their turkeys, as well as the volunteers who helped make the event a success! Also this past month, a large group of members from Pacific Crossroads Church visited La Casa and hosted their 5th annual “Boxes of Love” event. These volunteers provided a continental breakfast for our invited families, put together games for the kids and even set up a photo booth so everyone could take home a special picture. As they left, everyone received a large box filled with food items perfect for preparing on Thanksgiving. Thank you to Leslie Kita, from Pacific Crossroads, for organizing that event! We are truly thankful to everyone who works so

Happenings at La Casa

Our English classes have started up again! Once a week, a group of eager parents spend two hours together practicing and improving their English speaking skills. Our deep thanks goes out to Reverend Margarita Reyes who donates a large amount of her time to lead this class. We also have a new program for the preschool! Mr. Alex Lalin, a La Casa parent, volunteers his time to provide a lively and fun music class for our students. The kids really enjoy moving to the music and singing at the top of their lungs. Thank you Mr. Lalin!

Holiday Cheer

December always brings joy to La Casa and thanks to two amazing clubs our students and families are blessed with holiday celebrations. The San Gabriel Taiwanese Lions Club will be hosting their annual Christmas Party for our preschool on December 4th. The students will have their own celebration complete with lively entertainment and a toy distribution. On December 18th, the San Marino Rotary Club will host their annual Christmas dinner for our families, complete with a visit from Old St. Nick! For almost a decade, the club has provided not only our holiday dinner but also warm clothing and toys, and have helped coordinate gift donations from various other organizations to ensure a happy holiday for all. With our deepest appreciation, we salute these two awe-inspiring groups. Happy Holidays!

Annual Dinner a Success!

La Casa’s annual awards dinner was held on October 10th at Tamayo Restaurant and Art Gallery. It was a sold out event and everyone enjoyed the beautiful venue, delicious food and lively conversation. This year was very special as we honored Cheryl Prentice for her many years of dedicated service and CEO stewardship. In addition, La Casa co-founder Angelita Lizárraga, who turned 99 this year, was in attendance along with four generations of the Lizárraga family. Dr. David C. Lizárraga presented the Founders’ Award to San Gabriel’s finest first responders, our city police and fire departments. Thank you to all of our dinner sponsors and donors who helped make this one of our most successful and enjoyable dinners yet!

‘Tis The Season. . .

. . .for Giving Thanks and Spreading Compassion, Joy, and Hope. Another year is fast approaching its end and as we enjoy the holiday season, we reflect on the year that has passed. We have much to be thankful for at La Casa, and this has truly been a blessed year. Cheryl Prentice, our beloved Executive Director, a key cornerstone in our foundation, retired after over 40 years of service to La Casa. We are grateful that she has help navigate La Casa through many challenges and ensured our continued success for many years to come. Time will never erase the impact she has made, instead it will gain momentum as the generations she has touched grow, thrive and pay it forward. We wish Cheryl many years of health and happiness as she enjoys more time with her family and friends. It is with great fortune that the Board of
